Charles Morley Baxter is an American novelist, essayist, and poet. He is the author of several novels, including First Light and Blood Test, and has published short story collections like Harmony of the World and Believers. He was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1985 and received the PEN/Malamud Award for Excellence in the Short Story in 2021. For many years, he directed the Creative Writing MFA program at the University of Michigan; he also served as a visiting professor of creative writing at the University of Iowa and Stanford University. He also taught at the University of Minnesota and the Warren Wilson College MFA Program for Writers. He retired in 2020.
