Plot Summary
Mrs. H. T. Miller is a widow who lives alone in New York City. One day, she goes to the movie theater. She is asked by a little girl named Miriam if Mrs. Miller can buy a ticket for her; Miriam is too young. Mrs. Miller does so, and she feels giddy with having broken the law for a change. Miriam thanks her and they go their separate ways. A few days later, Miriam shows up at Mrs. Miller’s apartment, which doesn’t make sense, given that Mrs. Miller never gave the girl her address. Miriam refuses to leave unless Mrs. Miller gives her sandwiches. She departs only after much imploring and steals a cameo, which had been a gift from Mrs. Miller’s husband. Mrs. Miller is terribly frightened after that episode: she stays up at night and walks through the streets, suspicious of everyone and everything. She returns to her house, where Miriam is waiting for her with trunks, claiming that she’s now moving in. Mrs. Miller gets help from her neighbor, who summons her landlord to get the girl out of the apartment, but when he enters, he doesn’t see anyone. Mrs. Miller returns to an empty apartment and sits. Suddenly, she hears a sound and, upon opening her eyes, Mrs. Miller sees Miriam standing there, saying “Hello.”
