Plot Summary
Ahmed is a rideshare driver, determined to maintain financial independence from his family, particularly his father whom he worries is evil. Ahmed is also a Jinn, like everyone else in his family.
Working late, he picks up a fare, a strange man named Caleb who appears to be singing under his breath. Soon Ahmed realizes Caleb is actually murmuring incantations. Worse, he appears to be channeling the power of an entire coven. Based on where Caleb ordered his drop-off, Ahmed figures out Caleb intends to magically suicide-bomb a black church, and Caleb confirms his intentions with the words, "You people don't belong here."
Ahmed uses his magic to fight back, and overcomes Caleb's power, costing him his car and all the possessions he had on him. Caleb is consumed by his own power output in the process. Fortunately the police believe Ahmed's story, but unfortunately, they suspect he was abetting rather than fighting Caleb. Furthermore, Ahmed won't receive any compensation for his losses for nine weeks.
Desperate, he calls his brother, turning to the family he rejected. When his brother reminds him that their father asks a price for his help–that his sons use their magic to fight injustice. Ahmed knows, and he is finally willing to pay that price. Before, Ahmed rejected this call to violence, but now, having seen the face of injustice, he is ready to fight.
