Plot Summary
A PhD student decides to write their dissertation on the Year of Suicide. The Year of Suicide was a period in which 300,076 victims from ages 10-25 posted online recordings of their own suicides. During this time, youths around the country feared for their lives, not knowing what caused the suicides or who was going to die next. As the adults were incapable of or unwilling to take care of them or help in any way, the younger generation formed online communities to support and mourn each other. Years after the Year of Suicide, the government has established an archive of all the digital records of the suicides. The student spends two years going through the records, reliving their memories of the Year, reliving the deaths of so many children. They become depressed, angry, isolated, and disillusioned. Unable to progress with their life due to the trauma of researching the Year of Suicide, the student finds that they have fallen behind all their friends and they seem to be the only one still mourning and recovering from the deaths. They become paralyzed by their memories, unable to progress with the research. They decide that the mystery of the Year of Suicide cannot be solved. Finally, they recount how lonely the world is, how damaging those hundreds of thousands of deaths have been, and how much young people have had to rely on each other to survive in such a bleak world.
