Plot Summary
Callum Pederson is a detective working on a murder case with his fellow detective, Detective Chang. Four female students at Chaminade High School are murdered in a way that resembles a fairy tale. For some time before questioning any suspects, Detectives Pederson and Chang go undercover in the school. Chang poses as a science teacher and Pederson pretends to be one of the “Princes” (popular jocks in the in-crew). At a lacrosse game in which Pederson is participating in as a ‘student,’ he receives word from Chang that he is to go to the school as they must begin questioning students so as to move the investigation further ahead. Eric is waiting for questioning. Eric notices Pederson and makes a comment about him being there for questioning too. Eric tells Pederson that other Chaminade boys waiting in other rooms. Eric is confused as he is brought in for questions by one of his ‘bros’ and the chemistry teacher. Pederson explains that they are undercover cops working to solve the princess murders. Chang goes over the first murder with Eric. Ariana Merced was killed over a spinning wheel with a spindle in her throat. The police then interview Adam Master. Adam slept with Ariana twice and then sent her a bunch of messages after she blocked him. Adam denies any allegations of his association with the murder. He has an alibi for her murder: he was eating dinner at Flynn's house. Ariana had been spreading rumors about Adam. Adam says he did not care. Pederson begins getting threats and hate comments on his phone for being an undercover cop. Pederson receives a phone call from Rebecca, a girl he was “hanging out” with during his time undercover. Rebecca asks if her dad, the school principal, knew that he was a cop the entire time he was at the school. Pederson says yes. She hangs up. A few days later, the detectives bring in Naveen for questioning. Naveen is brought in by his dad, Mr. Mahotra, who is completely against Naveen being questioned. Eventually, Naveen’s dad leaves as Naveen says he is there to help with the investigation. Naveen says that he thinks Adam is responsible for the murder of Kelly Blake who had been murdered the previous day. Naveen has been lab partners with Kelly. He says that Adam hated Kelly. The police reject this claim as Adam had a solid alibi. Adam was volunteering on Mt. Zion with Phillip, Eric, and Flynn at the time of the murder. Naveen says that he is just trying to do the right thing by saying something. He tells the police that he and Kelly mostly talked about gossip during lab. Kelly wasn’t cool, but she was in with the “princesses” or popular girls because they felt safe talking to her. Naveen explains that the princess game means that the guys try to sleep with the hottest girl (a princess), brag about it, leave her, and start over. There is a hierarchy of girls at the school: princess, maiden, steward, and wench. Naveen had been rejected by a “wench”, Anika. Anika was poisoned with a cake that had ties to Naveen’s online video-game presence. Naveen had called Anika a racist for rejecting him. Naveen says he has to leave but that they can follow up with him at any time. Naveen has a solid alibi for her murder. A few days later, the detectives bring in Phillip for an interview. He is not a suspect as he has confirmed alibis for at least three of the murders. They are interviewing him to see if they can find any other information from him. They accuse him of hooking up with all of the victims. He declines having sex with Kelly. The police bring up texts he and Kelly exchanged where Kelly said she would keep their secret. He tells a story about Kelly coming into the locker room one day. However, that day, the lights went out in the high school and practice let out early. Pederson knows this because he was in the gym attempting to make a pass on Rebecca when he was undercover. There is footage of Phillip leaving the gym and going back inside. Another guy, Luke Stoeckel, who is homosexual, enters the gym. The two exit together sometime later and when they run into Kelly outside. Luke leaves while both Phillip and Kelly go back into the gym together. The two are seen leaving the gym later. At the time of Kelly’s murder, Phillip, Adam, Eric, and Flynn all had alibis. Flynn is refusing to make a statement and is hiding behind a lawyer. The detectives receive word that they need to stop bringing in so many kids as people in the town are getting angry with the process of the investigation. They bring in Luke for questioning. Luke says he is not friends with Phillip despite what the footage shows. Luke got beaten up by Phillip’s friends after drunkenly “harassing” and making a pass on Phillip at homecoming. The church where Phillip’s dad was a deacon kicked out Luke and his family as Luke is gay. The police suspect that maybe the killer wanted to keepPhillip and Luke’s potential homosexuality a secret by killing Kelly. Luke says they do not know what they are talking about. Rebecca interrupts the interview looking for her father as the interviews are being conducted in the principal’s office. Luke is dismissed. They talk to Rebecca, who recounts her relationship with Pederson. Rebecca says the murders aren’t actually about the princesses, but about the princes playing the game and warning the girls who are not playing by the rules. Rebecca explains that a bunch of the girls were figuring out the motivation of the guys and calling them out for it. She explains the pressure and the guys’ need to be part of the princes. She gives the example of Pederson who acted like a prince and played the game with her in order to be accepted. A girl and ‘wench,’ Madeline is murdered. They interview the mascot, Kristoff. Madeline was dared to kiss the ugliest boy in the locker room after she snuck into the boy’s locker room to listen for gossip on the princess game. The guys were going to report her if she didn’t. Madeline was going to expose the game by writing a report for the school newspaper. She was a feminist and very modest and anti-sex. She was not popular. They suspect Kristoff may have been offended by Madeline’s choosing him as the ugliest guy. He claims to not be bothered by this. He has a tattoo of a Snow White dwarf which makes the police suspicious though it does not really make Kristoff more of a suspect. Kristoff also has an alibi for the murder. Flynn presents a statement to the detectives. He also says he has a tip for the case as he has begun his own investigation. He calls the police out for not doing more and only questioning the school boys. He makes claims about their competence and lawfulness. He also brings up the questionable relations that Detective Pederson had with Rebecca. Flynn tells the detectives he read this to the whole school during the afternoon assembly and posted it online. Soon after this, the detectives are off the case and the FBI takes over. The FBI suspects an older man of committing the crimes based on a tip from Flynn. Pederson is given a severance package and Chang is moved back to desk duty. Pederson calls Rebecca and leaves a voicemail apologizing. While talking, Detectives Chang and Pederson solve the murder by thinking back over the interviews and details of the case. They realize that the so-called princes committed the murders for each other to protect each other and their secrets. It turns out that Rebecca was murdered in a manner that resembles Pinocchio. On the night of the murder, Pederson had been invited to a party with the guys which he did not go to. Pederson realizes that if he does not keep quiet and become one of the princes, he is going to be framed for Rebecca’s murder.
