Rosni Gupta is a speech pathologist working for Los Angeles Social Services. She is assigned to assess a Jane Doe who apparently only speaks gibberish. When she meets the woman (who she finds out is named something like Malni) and evaluates her, Rosni determines that Malni is certainly not autistic, and in fact very intelligent—she writes down an alphabet that Rosni's husband, an English teacher, later identifies as Old English. Intrigued, Rosni goes out of her way to check back with Malni, and leaves her with pen and paper to write her story down. When Rosni finally gets a call from Malni's roommate informing her that Malni finishing writing down her story, Rosni finds a lengthy narrative and no Malni—who has left, apparently with a relative. Rosni finds an expert in Old English to translate Malni's story, which is revealed to be a convoluted tale of time travel and alternate realities. Rosni never reconnects with Malni, or figures out her story entirely. But inspired by Malni's example, she finds new confidence in herself.
