Plot Summary
Princess Essylt is seen as a cursed child because her mother died giving birth to her. A court soothsayer prophecies that Essylt will grow up strong and pure, but once she finds her one true love, she will be the downfall of her father, the king. Fearful of his daughter's prophecy, the king relegates Essylt to the far reaches of the castle and Essylt is raised by her nursemaid. Over the years, Essylt is forbidden from leaving the castle and lives a life of relative solitude. Meanwhile, the king looks for a woman to give him a male heir, but all his wives die. Finally, the king meets Sadiya, a young woman from a nearby country. Struck by lust for her, he decides to make her his bride. But when Essylt meets Sadiya, the two girls fall in love almost instantly. On the day of the king's wedding to Sadiya, Essylt protests and tries to run away with Sadiya. She fails, and Sadiya is forced to marry the king, while Essylt is taken to the forest and abandoned to die. Essylt journeys through the forest and almost perishes, but she is saved when she stumbles upon a cabin owned by a loving couple. The couple takes Essylt in and grows to love her like a daughter. Essylt spends months regaining her strength and training in swordfighting to become strong enough to go back to the castle and save Sadiya. When news comes that the king will execute Sadiya for taking contraceptives to prevent herself from conceiving a child, Essylt journeys back to the castle to save her. On the day of Sadiya's execution, Essylt appears and fights off knights and her father to free Sadiya. Sadiya kills the king; she and Essylt leave the castle to live happily ever after together.
