Maggs lies on her deathbed, recalling her adventures as a young woman alongside her now-dead sister, Kate. Famous for their abilities to commune with the dead, the two sisters once traveled the country, using stagecraft and magic tricks to convince their audiences they could visit a beautiful afterlife they called Summerland. Their performances hid a dark truth - Maggs and Kate really could visit the afterlife, and knew it was a cold land of horror and monsters governed by Mr. Splitfoot, a vicious ghost longing to possess them and force them to murder each other.
As their lies collapsed around them, their careers onstage slowly drew to an end. But Mr. Splifoot didn't leave them, his cruelty and hatred controlling their lives and nearly leading Maggs to kill her husband.
Now, at the end of her life, Maggs sees him more frequently. One day, she hallucinates her nurse, Emily, transform into her dead sister. The room gathers darkness, chills, and echoes with ghostly tapping. Mr. Splitfoot appears and Maggs realizes she and her sister have opened a door for him to slip into the world of the living and unleash violence and destruction.
