Plot Summary
A married couple, Margaret, a 24-year-old woman, and her older husband, Ned, watch a thunderstorm outside. Margaret is talking about how she enjoys the warm weather, and her husband mentions that all women like the heat. This statement causes Margaret to ask about Ned’s past lover Phyllis, who she discovered when the woman’s photos fell out of a pile of snapshots. Ned says that Phyllis was a lovely girl and that it had been a good relationship. The two had met during a war, where he was a soldier, and she was a nurse who tended to his wounds. Margaret isn’t jealous of the past girlfriend. Instead, she believes that she is lucky that Ned has more experience due to his past relationship and older age. Margaret asks if Ned feels trapped, and Ned instead responds if Margaret feels trapped due to her young age. Margaret rebuffs this by saying that she has a baby, but it isn’t clear if Ned is the father. The storm approaches the couple, and Margaret returns to the house to close the windows and tend to her child. Ned smokes for a little bit outside before he returns home. When he arrives in the bedroom, he finds Margaret caring for her sleepy child. The family then goes to bed, and as Margaret sleeps, Ned listens to the thunderstorm.
