Plot Summary
Engineer is a cyborg on a spaceship with a group of other cyborgs, including Friendly, Navi, Captain, and Jukebox. She and the others escaped from a resort, where they had been enslaved by humans for years, and built and rebuilt to serve human purposes. They hijacked a ship and are now en route out of the galaxy. Unfortunately, the ship they hijacked was a traveling restaurant. As it moves in space, humans mistake it for its original use, and force the robots to pose as restauranteurs so as not to blow their cover.
There is a limited amount of meat available on the ship, which makes it difficult for the cyborgs to cook. Because some of the cyborgs were designed with meat-made organs to accomplish certain tasks, the cyborgs can re-appropriate their meat to feed the humans. However, when a cyborg loses their meat, they lose functionality.
Captain is the first one to sacrifice her meat for the greater good so that they can feed some customers. Engineer cooks Captain's meat but makes a sub-par meal, which results in the traveling restaurant being awarded one star on a review service. The review bothers Engineer more than it should, and leads her to experiment further with cooking and work to get more stars.
This newfound passion motivates Engineer to take the other cyborgs' meat, one-by-one, until only she and Friendly are left. Abhorred by Engineer's behavior, Friendly alerts the human authorities, who come onto the ship to disable Engineer. The authorities do not arrest Friendly for being a rebellious robot because Friendly was the only cyborg who resembles a human, given her past use in hospitality. Engineer is stripped of all her steel, and she reflects in her last moments about how humans ceaselessly abused her for her utility.
