Plot Summary
A middle-aged man in New York City comes back from a party to the apartment that he shares with his husband, Phillip. The man recently got into a car crash after having been drunk driving, which resulted in the mild scarring of his body, the death of an innocent stranger who tried to help him, and the further disintegration of his marriage. Phillip mentions that he’ll be going to Corsica over the summer with his boyfriend, Caleb. Although Phillip and his husband had agreed to have an open relationship, the man still feels hurt. He mentions a story that he heard at the party earlier that night, but Phillip doesn’t want to hear it. They fall asleep. The next day, the man goes to the acupuncturist and runs into Caleb. They have a decent conversation, during which the man finds it difficult to be mad at Caleb for anything but nevertheless wishes that their small talk would come to a halt. After his appointment, the man passes what used to be CBGB, the dance club that he came to on his first night in New York. He realizes that his life in New York is over. He remembers the story that he was told at the party. Ramona, the host of the party, found one of her neighbors crying because his partner, Marie, had fallen out of a window trying to unhook a plastic bag from a tree. As he thinks of the story, a stranger offers the man a bottle of water because he looks dehydrated. The stranger leaves and the man wishes that he hadn’t been so kind because kindness makes it harder to stay.
