Plot Summary
Will le Fey works for the "haint" politician Salem Toussaint. The haints are a low-class species, but Toussaint is fairly respected because of his job. Toussaint learns that Ice, one of his haint constituents, was arrested for murdering a lowlife "boggart" named Bobby Buggane. Ice, who lives in the building basement, is a suspect because haints can walk through locked doors, and Bobby was alone in his locked apartment. At the crime scene, Will and and his haint coworker Ghostface find a number of details that don't add up. Additionally, Ghostface reveals that Ice is his brother. After further investigation, Will begins to suspect that Buggane framed Ice. The two of them had stolen a load of jade together and were waiting to sell it. When Ice started to worry that Buggane would stiff him, Buggane decided to frame him for murder by ripping out his own heart inside a locked apartment and then throwing it out the window to his girlfriend, waiting below. Buggane has a glass heart that can repair his body, even if he's clinically dead. Since Buggane's girlfriend works at the morgue, she can put it back into his body that night after Ice has been arrested. Sure enough, Will, Ghostface, and Toussaint go to the morgue and witness Buggane come back to life. Toussaint arrests Buggane and his girlfriend.
