Plot Summary
A young woman named Danni is terrified of flying in planes, even when her husband Virgil buys a small one at an auction. On a family vacation, she decides to drive up to their house while Virgil and their five-year-old son Keith fly there together, but the two never make it. Their plane crashes and kills both of Danni’s family members. In her grief, Danni attempts to commit suicide by sleeping pills, but is found before it’s too late. Her old friend Merrill offers for Danni to move in with her in California, and she agrees. There, Merrill has her join a support group for people who have tried to commit suicide, where she meets a woman named Nora. A few months after they meet, Nora gives Danni an ancient, sharp human bone that she calls the Lagerstätte, and tells her that if she cuts herself with it and calls her family that they will come to her. Danni tells this all to Dr. Green, a therapist she began seeing after Merrill found her bleeding from her ritual with the Lagerstätte. Dr. Green asks her for more details, and Danni continues to tell him of a time after the incident when she and Merrill went to a vineyard and she wandered off after a ghost of Virgil. She then gets upset talking about that story and diverges into another, where she remembers going out drinking with Merrill one night and seeing hundreds of Virgils appear around her. That night, a drunk lawyer they were out with took her back to his apartment and sexually assaulted her, but she got so upset that she vomited. His disgust gave her a chance to run, but in her haze she fell down a flight of stairs and lay there as visions of her son Keith came to her. Later, police found her and took her to the hospital, where her head was stitched up. Despite Merrill’s promise to watch her, she gets called into an emergency at work and leaves Danni alone. In a fugue state, Danni attempts to kill herself in the bathroom, but Merrill finds her and cuts herself with the Lagerstätte to show her she doesn’t have to leave. Dr. Green asks again what happened at the vineyard, and Danni remembers how she followed Virgil into a graveyard that Nora calls the Lagerstätte, and her old scar from the first cut begins to bleed again. Virgil tries to get her to come with him and she loses herself in memories of her old family, until she shakes awake suddenly half-buried in the dirt. It’s night and everyone is looking for her. Dr. Green tells her that although they have a long way to go, they can look at further options for treatment and everything will be fine.
