Amberjack's family sends her to the School for Furious Girls after she burns the face of her younger sister, Cassia, in a fit of rage. At the school, she lives with other girls like her under the supervision of Miss Babs, where she is supposed to learn to control her rage. Miss Babs says that they contain this fire and fury because of all the anger bottled up by their ancestors.

Amberjack and her friends at the school sneak out and wreak havoc on the town, such as burning down the ice cream parlor. On one excursion, Amberjack goes back to visit her family. Though they are nice to her, she can tell that they do not want her to stay.

When the mayor of the town learns that a monsoon is happening, he begs Miss Babs to protect them. She says that the girls do not possess such power. Cassia comes to visit the school, and Amberjack vows to protect her. When Cassia learns that Amberjack will not protect their parents, she returns to be with them.

One of the other girls, Kyla, tells Amberjack that she is, in fact, able to protect people, that her powers are within her control. She rallies her friends to return to the town to save the townspeople. They joining together and harness their powers, learning, in the process, that Cassia possesses powers as well.
