Plot Summary
After returning the I CAN SPEAK 1900 (ICS1900) mask for babies, a woman, Mrs. Faniglia, receives a letter from a sales representative from KidLuv. KidLuv is a company which is selling products for child development purposes. The sales representative begins his letter by saying that he will be using his personal time (his lunch break) to address her questions and discuss the product.
He continues in a rather condescending fashion, saying that the woman may be dissatisfied because she had the wrong expectations of the product. He says the product cannot read babies' minds and that the mask is not the actual baby speaking. Rather, the ICS1900 is a device that picks up on audio patterns and generates phrases that are transmitted through the mask worn by the baby, to make the baby appear more intelligent. It is just the position of the mask on the baby’s face that will give the illusion of the baby speaking.
The sales rep dismisses Mrs. Fanigilia’s claim that the mask is not really accurate looking. He explains that the ICS1900 model is made up of several thousand images of baby faces. The mask is a result of this conglomeration of pictures. The mask is called Little Roger. He tells her of the new model, the ICS200, which is made to look just like the customer’s baby. He offers to give her an upgrade for free. He then offers to send the team to her home to make a personalized plaster cast of her son’s face. They will also record his voice so that the mask will sound like her baby. He offers to throw in personalizing options, explaining that Mrs. Faniglia may opt for the ICS200 mask to come with pre-programmed phrases.
The salesman explains that this mask makes parents love their children more because their children are articulate. He also states that it will make their children more appealing to their friends, which will, in turn, encourage their friends to have children. He says there is something compelling about having a child who is witty and self-possessed long before they would actually be those things.
The salesman gives Mrs. Faniglia tips on how to make her baby flinch less when he wears the mask. The salesman continues to say that this mask will make babies more clever and more confident, as no baby wants to feel bad about not speaking when surrounded by speaking adults.
The salesman continually talks about how he uses the product on his child and loves it. He says that he did not get it for free and paid two thousand dollars for it—just like her!
The salesman begins to conclude his letter in saying that she may return it and deny his offer of a free upgrade to the ICS200. Though, this would come at the cost of him losing a commission. However, he reassures her that this is not about losing his commission, but about her satisfaction as well as her son. He urges her to consider his offer as children are loveable, though they are more loveable when they become better than they really are by using the KidLuv development products. He reiterates that he won’t be wasting his son’s formative years by not taking advantage of the ICS200.
