Plot Summary
Sean is a middle-aged man who works at a mill. One day, his wife, Daisy, tells him that their teenage son, Victor, has impregnated a twin, Esme. Esme gives birth to a son, Dylan, and moves in with Sean and Daisy. Sean takes to Esme and buys he a bracelet, a strange move for him, considering that he’s not one for gifts. Together, the grandparents take care of their grandson while Esme and Victor struggle to get along. In the fourth year of Dylan’s life, Esme skips out on town. Victor is bitter, but he recovers when he meets Ming, a Filipina immigrant who he marries. Ming gets pregnant but she miscarries, making the whole family sad. One day, Sean sees Esme at the grocery store, wearing the old bracelet he bought her. He suggests that he could drive Dylan over to her house so that they could spend time together. She agrees, and Sean drops Dylan off without telling Victor. When he comes back to pick the boy up, Esme and Dylan are gone; Esme’s sister says that Esme wants to bring him back to where she lives so that she can raise him. Sean catches up to Esme and tussles with her in the woods before Dylan, picking up Victor’s old gun from the backseat, fires it. The gunshot misses both Esme and Sean but, shaken, they stop fighting. Sean allows Esme to take Dylan away with her…for now.
