In New York City, a young Black boy named Carlos comes to the house of an interior designer, Tony, to tell him that his housekeeper, Zona, has been shot and passed away. Carlos was Zona’s nephew, and he is charged with the task of going to all of the houses that Zona worked at to see if he can procure enough money for the coffin. Tony is destitute, so he gives Carlos nothing, but he refers him to Joseph, a Jewish client of Zona’s who works in a print shop. Joseph offers his apologies, but it is unclear whether he gives Carlos any money.
Finally, Carlos visits Cynthia, a former musician, who brings him to the bank so that she can withdraw money to give him. As she hands it over, she mentions how she just won’t be able to donate to Planned Parenthood that year. Carlos replies that they like funerals anyways, so they won’t take too much issue with where the money went.
