A white innkeeper in Denmark has a strange encounter with a large black sailor who asks for a room and the company of a prostitute.

After her 10-year-old brother dies from AIDS, an adolescent girl's family moves to a less affluent neighborhood in Florida due to their extensive medical bills. When the girl babysits her new neighbors, two young Black girls, she reckons with subtle questions around race, wealth, class, and grief.

As the only son of the only Black family in an otherwise entirely white and racist town, a teenage boy has always struggled to fit in. When he gets his chance to participate in the town's big horse race, he hopes it's finally enough to prove himself, but his feelings for his neighbor's son complicate the day even more.
