Plot Summary
Dr. Ruth Baringer arrives in Hollywood for the International Congress of Quantum Physicists Annual Meeting. Ruth is determined to hear Dr. Gedanken's keynote address on quantum theory. She suspects that nobody actually understands quantum theory, but they aren't willing to admit it. The hotel receptionist, Tiffany, has messed up all the reservations. Ruth spends several hours waiting with Abey Fields, who complains that the conference should be held in Racine, instead of Hollywood. Several of the physicists ask Ruth if she's seen another physicist, David, because they were practically inseparable at the previous year's conference. But Ruth tries to avoid him because she doesn't want to miss any of the lectures. By the time Ruth gets into her room and gets ready for the evening, she has missed a couple of events. She runs into David, who wants her to go sightseeing with him. They try to attend the opening lecture, but they are in the wrong room. Instead, David takes Ruth to eat ice cream outside Grauman's Chinese Theatre. As they look at the hand and footprints on the sidewalk, David tells her that people know nothing about quantum theory, just like they know nothing about the actors behind the footprints. Ruth leaves him to attend a seminar on the structure of chaos, but she again can't find it. She goes to bed. The next morning, Ruth waits for Dr. Darlene Mendoza, who will be her roommate for the rest of the conference. Ruth attends a presentation on Delayed Choice Experiments, while David invites her to join him for breakfast and more sightseeing, but she declines. She goes to Dr. Whedbee's lecture on information theory, which is delayed. Ruth goes to a restaurant by herself, trying to avoid David, but he finds her immediately. He takes her out for donuts and tells her that he is still trying to make sense of the Grauman's Chinese Theatre. Ruth goes to a panel on the EPR paradox and witnesses a fight between two physicists. She begins to see the connection between electrons in quantum theory and her relationship with David. She finally gets a call from Darlene, who Tiffany had sent to another hotel. Darlene tells her that she should go to the movies with David because he's one of the last two charming men in the universe. Ruth tries to attend Dr. Gedanken's lecture, but nobody knows where he is. Ruth runs to Grauman's Chinese Theatre to find David. She buys a ticket for Benji IX, but the girl at the box office makes her choose which version of the movie she wants to watch. She chooses the one with the happy ending. She finds David in the theatre and sits next to him, Darlene, and Dr. Gedanken.
