Plot Summary
The stained woman sits in the bar, and the bartender serves her many drinks. The stained woman complains to her about the man whom she works for, in her office. She thinks about how she dropped out of school, became an alcoholic, and came in and out of various jobs. While her job now is easy, she has to deal with men. She then recalls how she got the nickname of stain, which was in her childhood. As a kid, she is intimidated by a group of girls who ask her for a smoke. Instead of capitulating to them, she fights them and beats the ringleader bloody, after which she rubs the ringleader’s blood on her shirt, thus earning her the name of stain.
As the stained woman drinks, the bartender offers her a scratch-off to play with. From it, she wins five dollars. They light candles for a sense of atmosphere in the bar. Soon enough, the stained woman’s old neighbor comes in and laments seeing her here as well. She thinks about how the old neighbor is friends with a guy she used to hook up with even though he was married. Now she hates the sight of him and his new girlfriend. The old neighbor then goes up to the bartender and says she owes him money for feeding him bad information. The bartender pulls out a bat and tries to intimidate him. However, the old neighbor jumps over the bar, holds her down, and takes the bat from her. The stained woman tricks him into thinking she’ll help him open the cash register, but she disarms him, threatens him with the bat, and tells him to leave.
The grieving woman gets into the neighborhood, where the guy—who hooked up with the stained woman, and also shot the grieving woman’s lover—presumably lives. She reminisces on her life with her lover and feels guilty about the incident in which he was shot. She thinks about how the guy shot her lover and dropped his gun into a nearby sewer. Now she has found the location of the guy’s mother. Here, she retrieves the gun from the sewer and walks up to the guy’s mother’s building. However, she struggles to come to terms with her revenge as well as her faith. She walks away and goes into the bar instead.
In the bar, the grieving woman sits down and is greeted by the stained woman, whom she sits beside. The stained woman tries to guess the grieving woman’s name, but she fails. Suddenly, the grieving woman asks for a piece of paper and an envelope, which the bartender supplies to her for free. Saddened now and brought to tears, the grieving woman writes her letter. The other women try to comfort her. Eventually, the grieving woman leaves the bar, comes back, and hides out in the bathroom for a very long time. The stained woman and the bartender try to guess what she’s up to, whether or not she’s doing drugs.
A cop comes into the bar. He’s looking for the guy, the same one who hooked up with the stained woman and killed the grieving woman’s lover. The bartender says he was just here. Soon enough, a loud bang sounds from the bathroom where the grieving woman is. They wonder what it is and altogether assume that it must have been a suicide. The cop goes up to the door and knocks several times before threatening to come in. However, the grieving woman speaks up, thus proving that she’s still alive. She asks for the stained woman to talk to her instead of the cop.
At the bathroom door, the grieving woman tells the stained woman that she tried to shoot herself but missed. She says that she did it out of despair, and the stained woman thinks about how she too has lived a life of despair which plunged her into alcoholism, though she has been learning to deal with it better. The stained woman then convinces the grieving woman to get out of the bathroom and hand over her gun, which she does.
Suddenly, the guy comes into the bar and falls down dead. The grieving woman recognizes him and lambastes him for killing her lover. Upon further inspection, it appears that the guy has been badly injured by a bullet. Soon enough, his new girlfriend comes in and tries to assess his condition. The bartender calls the cops, but the grieving woman grabs the bartender’s bat from earlier and starts hitting him with it until his head is bashed open. Far away, the sound of ambulances can be heard. The stained woman consoles the grieving woman as red lights fill the bar.
