Plot Summary
One day, Old Bill Smith decides that he wants to go hunting for a deer. When Old Bill ventures into the woods, he quickly realizes that he has shot all the deer around this part of the woods. But, as he keeps going, he suddenly runs into a white deer. He recognizes this as the chance of a lifetime, and becomes nervous and misses his shot. He shoots at the deer again, this time making sure his aim is better, yet he still manages to miss the white buck. Old Bill begins to think he has a defective cartridge. He then sees Mrs. Charley Joe on the trail. Old Bill invites Mrs. Charley Joe along with him and he promises her that he will hunt her a deer. When Old Bill finds the white deer again, he shoots six times. Finally, at the sixth shot, the deer falls down, but when the two go to collect their winnings, they discover six dead deer lying on the rocks. He leaves the deer for Mrs. Charley Joe and sets back along his path. Old Bill suddenly runs into a she-cougar that chases him (but in playful way). The cougar takes Bill's hat but he remains otherwise unharmed. No one believed Old Bill's story, but for a long time his cabin was the happiest in all of the town. Then, ten years later, Old Bill develops a disease that causes him to die.
