Plot Summary
Grimace, a Black man living on the streets of New York, works to find a meal. He speaks to his collection of old bottles as if they are his friends; he also hears them speak back. Two teenagers try to set him on fire, but he reacts by talking to them about stars and scares them away. He enters a Black church and fills his bottles with gasoline. He sets the church on fire, then feels as though he is a a shuttle in outer space. Grimace goes to a McDonald's and tries to take someone's cheeseburger, which is how he meets Kim. She shares that she lost someone close to her, a kid who also lived on the streets. She wants to light a candle in remembrance of him and Grimace volunteers to help. Kim later reveals that she is transgender. The two explore a mosque and Grimace tries to burn it down, explaining that the gods of their ancestors miss them. Kim attacks him to keep him from setting the fire, but stops because she hears the cans speaking to her. She runs away, and as Grimace goes back to work setting the fire, he sees a newscast with his mugshot and realizes that police are looking for him. He reconnects with Kim at a chicken restaurant and they go on a walk together. She tells him that she visited an astral city on a red supergiant and now thinks of it as her home. The gods' voices filter through Grimace's bottles, speaking to both of them. The gods revealed to Kim that they left for the stars after white men invaded Africa. Kim tells Grimace that they are going to travel up to the star together and receive jobs serving the gods.
