Plot Summary
Clara's cousins force her to go to a club. At first, the experience is better than she expected, but then a boy gropes her. Clara immediately freezes at the contact. She knows that she will be the one criticized and blamed for whatever happens. Clara has recently moved to Brooklyn from Trinidad with her parents. Their family sleeps on the floor of her aunt’s apartment, and Clara met her cousins for the first time a few weeks ago. Her cousins' father is currently not in the picture, and Clara’s mom convinces her aunt to forget about him. Clara’s situation at the club draws her into memories of her friend Myesha from her old high school. After Myesha bragged that she planned to kiss her new boyfriend behind the bleachers, she returned to class with a large bruise on her face. Rumors and criticism about Myesha quickly spread through the school, and Clara chose to keep her distance in order to protect herself. Clara considers her options for escape from the boy who groped her. She realizes that if she draws attention to herself or asks for help, she will only be blamed by others. As the club crowd jumps with the music, Clara lets gravity briefly draw down all her weight, which causes the boy to suddenly fall while she still stands. He curses her out, but her cousins stand behind her in defense, and the guy he bumped into quickly gets his attention. Clara leaves the club with her cousins, and her uncle is finally home when they return.
