Brice is an experienced outdoorsman who often leads hikes in the nearby wilderness. He has a hike planned for a group of people 60 and older. He is preparing to drive up the mountain with his wife, Syl, with an old acquaintance arrives.
Mal and Brice have known each other for years but there has been bad blood between them because of Mal's flakiness and because Mal used to date Brice's wife. Mal emailed Brice to tell him he was coming, but Brice is not especially thrilled to see Mal again. Regardless, the three of them drive up the mountain to the trailhead.
There they meet their group and start their hike. Brice is leading the hike and has assigned Mal to stand at the back of the group and make sure no one falls behind. Brice's wife, Syl, walks back with Mal and Brice can hear them bantering. Meanwhile, a 53-year-old widow named Beverly comes to the front of the group and tries to flirt with Brice.
The group does not make it all the way to the top of the mountain and the hike is not entirely pleasant. They find litter on the trail and the body of a poached bear. They eventually must turn back when it starts to snow. They make it down without incident, but when Brice and the group make it back to the trailhead, he realizes that Syl and Mal have fallen behind.
With the help of Beverly, he tries to go back and look for them but eventually must contact Search and Rescue. In the meantime, Beverly flirts even more with Brice, but he, for the most part turns her down. The story ends as Brice thinks through how he will go back to his car and wait for morning to come—how he and Syl will be safely reunited.
