Plot Summary
A group of friends engages in an annual Halloween tradition of taking shots depending on what trick-or-treaters' costumes are. When the tradition began many years ago, the friend group had eight people, but now they are only three total: Rachel, Nalene, and Bill, who begrudgingly continue the tradition for the sake of the group. Rachel draws from a hat and receives "universal horror," which they define as a costume of any classic horror monster. The first trick-or-treater that Rachel drinks to is a small child dressed as a mummy, who arrives with a mysterious father that stays outside smoking. The friends notice that the mummy's costume looks very realistic. After getting candy, the mummy gives Rachel a brownie on a toothpick. He coughs out blood before leaving, and the friends are convinced he has impressive special effects makeup. The friends also notice how he looks less like a Halloween mummy and more like a burn victim with his body wrapped. After he leaves, Rachel digs into the bowl for a candy bar and pulls out a bloody fingernail. Rachel thinks it’s a prank from the mummy and dismisses it. Rachel eventually eats the mummy's brownie. Bill asks the friends to tell stories of their past, and Rachel talks about someone named Craig who went out with her. On the way back from a date one night, they ran over something unknown. A few weeks later, Rachel finds out about a hit-and-run case of a child. The person who killed the child returned to burn the evidence of the body, and Rachel believed it could have been Craig. However, she feels indirectly responsible for it. Rachel goes to the bathroom at one point and vomits the alcohol and brownie she consumed. She is horrified to see live maggots in the vomit pile. The mummy returns, and the friends joke that he is coming back for more good candy. Shortly after he leaves, Bill passes out on the couch from the drinking. Rachel tells Nalene she thinks there was something in the brownie the mummy gave her, but they are too drunk to take it seriously. Rachel and Nalene use cocaine shortly after and become extremely cross-faded. Rachel eventually goes upstairs to rest after the trick or treating is over. She lays down on a pile of Nalene's grocery bags and balls of yarn that were on the bed. She awakes in the middle of the night and hears something dripping downstairs. Attempting to get out of bed, her arms become entangled with the yarn. She hears a car honk outside multiple times and sees the father of the mummy standing beside his car, smoking a cigarette, who waves at her. Frightened, Rachel calls for Nalene to no avail. She feels like she is in a bad dream. She hears a knocking come from the closet door next to the bed. When she opens it, the little mummy appears and says "trick or treat." In her fear, Rachel connects the mummy to the hit-and-run case from her high school. She thinks the gauze on the boy's body is for the burns that the victim endured when the murderer burned the evidence. Rachel apologizes to the mummy, to which he nods. She takes his hand and he leads her into the closet, where she dies.
