Plot Summary
Shiva, a teenage girl in England, first meets Harry in the library when they reach for the same book. It is a brief interaction, but the two teenagers later bump into each other again and introduce themselves this time. The third time they meet, Shiva greets Harry while at the library with her father. Her father invites Harry to join them for coffee and makes endless jokes about the two of them dating. As a test, Shiva’s father asks Harry a question about British history and the way colonized countries were forced to learn English. Harry's answer reveals that he has never questioned the history they teach in school. After they leave, Shiva defends Harry and says that he is young and still learning. The next time she meets with Harry, Shiva apologizes for her father’s test. Harry admits that her father’s questions about history felt intense, and Shiva says that he was only trying to test if Harry was aware of how much “programming” he has received. Shiva further explains that he has allowed himself to be blinded by one version of history and now fails to see the ugly truths about colonialism and other matters that schools try to hide. Harry says that it was just one conversation, and it does not mean he has been programmed. Shiva realizes that maybe Harry does not want to figure history out for himself like she had hoped and leaves. The fifth time they meet, Shiva is surprised to see that Harry is at the library with books about colonialism in India and the effects of the British imperialism.
