Plot Summary
Lois Bentley considers her life ideal; she has a lovely husband, goes to parties with her friends, and lives exclusively in hotel suites. She and her husband originally planned to buy a house in the country for the summers, but never got around to it. After one such party, Lois and her husband Don arrive back at the hotel and he suddenly declares that he does not want to live in hotels anymore. All of the conveniences she’d enjoyed, such as bellboys, hotel dinners, and other people’s things, he had actually despised. He wants to own something himself and says he will go buy a place to fix up and live in. In shock, Lois can hardly believe that he would ever leave her, and goes to bed comforted by his assurance that he will call her soon. Still, as she falls asleep she too has a feeling that she doesn’t know where she is anymore.
