Plot Summary
An Englishman, a Scotsman, and an Irishman are acting out a joke. The joke goes that all three are caught by an enemy and sentenced to death by firing squad. Before the Englishman gets killed, he yells “earthquake” and escapes when the firing squad turns and looks around. Similarly, the Scotsman yells “tornado” and runs away before he is shot. The Irishman, trying to replicate the tactics of the first two, yells “fire” at the firing squad. The three men all return to their room and repeat their mundane routine of playing cards, cooking, and sitting in silence. They are called often to play out different jokes, getting costumes and being in a different place every time there is a knock on their door. Every week, they are allowed out of the room and can mingle with others who are part of jokes, people of all different ethnicities and even some chickens. One day they hear a knock at the door and a young girl wearing a sign that says “your daughter” is standing there. She cannot speak and looks similar to all the men and so they all decide to raise her as their own. They play out their jokes for her and live to watch her laugh. As she gets older they realize that she is eventually going to have to marry someone if she wants a job similar to theirs and so they think of men to marry, but decide no man is good enough for her and marry her to a chicken. She leaves and the men feel empty and cannot bring the same energy to their jokes anymore. The Englishman tries to kill himself but is unable to. He eventually decides to leave and get another gig as a knock knock man in knock knock jokes. The Scotsman and the Irishman try to continue their bits without him, but it isn’t as funny anymore. Eventually the Scotsman dies and the Irishman is left alone to be the butt of the jokes, even though there is no set up. One day as he is being executed by a firing squad he looks among the shooters and sees his daughter standing among them. He tells her how good she is doing and tells her to pull the trigger.
