Plot Summary
Dez is a model/actor along with his girlfriend Cherie, and the two of them are on their way to being stars - until Cherie's premature death leaves Dez unable to move past his grief. The annoyed studio head, Carol, is eager to get Dez back to work, so she gives him a vial of Cherie's DigImage - her digitally preserved personality - to experience through a reader, hoping the chance to say goodbye will help him move on. Eager to be as close to his lost love as possible, Dez injects Cherie's DigImage directly into his brain. This has the desired effect: he vividly hallucinates Cherie's presence. It is supposed to wear off in a couple of days, but instead, the hallucinations degrade so that Cherie remains, slowly decaying into a terrifying undead form. Cherie tells Dez he is stuck with her for good, as long as the traces of her DigImage remain in his brain. Attempting to fix the problem, Carol gives Dez a vial of his own DigImage, working on the theory that flushing his brain with enough 'himself' will wash all the 'Cherie' away. Dez takes the vial but doesn't use it, as the problem seems to have gone away on its own. But as Dez makes a streamed celebrity appearance on a new luxury space liner, Cherie reappears to him. He panics and as the number of people watching the feed grows in response to the sudden drama, he injects himself with his own DigImage. However, he has been with Cherie his whole adult life, and the memories he injects almost all include her, making her stronger. As the feed audience hits one billion people, Cherie becomes visible to the camera, and just as they always dreamed, Dez and Cherie are stars.
