D_é_d_é_ is Christmas shopping in Paris with her grandfather, Papa Gène. To any Parisian passing them on the street, it is obvious they are from the countryside. Paris has already recovered from some of the struggles of World War II and picked up where it left off.
Dédé and Papa Gène come from Creuse, a hilly and remote region in Central France. D_é_d_é_ has spent most of her life living on her grandparent’s farm, and they are only visiting Paris for the winter to stay with her uncle and his family. She finds the city enjoyable, but her heart stays in Creuse, where each day of each season looks different. Papa Gène also misses Creuse and thinks of what he would have been doing. He misses his neighbor Verne and his wife Mère Christine’s cooking. Parisian life is dull to him, as everyone prefers talking to doing.
At the street market, D_é_d_é _struggles to pick out the right present for Mère Christine. They come across a wheel of fortune, and she plays until she wins a fancy lampshade for her grandmother. Papa Gène ushers Dédé home to help her aunt take care of the baby. Meanwhile, he goes to attend a raunchy, mostly nude dance performance. He enjoys it so much that he buys another ticket to watch again. He smiles happily now that he has something to tell Vergne and Mère Christine about.
