Wells is a sleazy magician who makes a meager living performing at events, like children's birthday parties. His father, it is implied, has made some sort of deal with the devil or death and traded his soul in exchange for real magic, which he has passed to Wells in the form of a trick bag, which Wells can use to make things truly appear.
Wells is in a bar at 10 in the morning, where he sets his sights on an obviously disturbed British woman, Caro. She takes him to a funeral home, where it's implied that they have sex. He thinks the woman is a new widow, but she actually just lost her toddler son in a motorcycle accident. He leaves the funeral home with the procession of grievers, who are not happy to see him among their cars and bikes. Later, he finds himself at a children's birthday party, where the kids are friends of Caro's dead son, and they ask him to bring him back to life. He can't.
Back at the bar, Caro and her husband beat Wells up for ruining their funeral procession. After recovering from his injuries at the bar, he goes out to the graveyard and meets Caro. Death/the Devil appears and try to take the son, but Wells gives him the soul of his father, instead, which has apparently been in the trick bag this entire time. The boy comes back to life.
