A woman and her husband live abroad in Paris, where they spend their time translating art books. Neither of them knows how to cook very well, so they spend much of their income on takeout and old American movies.
One night, the wife tries to cook dinner; she prepares boneless fish fillets, but one of the fillets contains a bone. This bone gets stuck in her husband's throat and no amount of water makes it come unstuck. The injury becomes painful. They visit the apartment of a local nurse, who tells them to go to the hospital. Nurses at the hospital struggle to get the bone out. Finally, a young doctor sticks multiple instruments down the man's throat and is able to extract the bone at long last.
The woman claims that ten years have passed since then, and she and the man have since divorced. However, whenever they are together, they reflect on the experience with a degree of nostalgia.
