Plot Summary
Mama Tuddi, a local Black TV personality known for The Mama Tuddi Show, attends the funeral service for Reno Brown, a young boy who was a big fan of hers. Her program manager wants her to do it as a public service to gain publicity. Mama Tuddi arrives and finds the building empty. Inside, all the mirrors on the wall are covered or turned to face the wall. Bothered by a tooth ache, Mama Tuddi turns over one of the mirrors to examine her mouth. Then she goes to a table by the end of the hall where she uncovers a picture of Reno. When she turns around, she thinks she sees the boy, but he vanishes like a ghost. She finds other people, one of whom tells her that the devil will enter into her for looking into a mirror at a time like this. Mama Tuddi ignores him. She goes and finds her seat, which is a position of honor, right beside the boy's mother and her current boyfriend. They talk a little, and Mama Tuddi learns that the preacher has been delayed by traffic. Ahead of her, she notices the small casket at the front of the room. Someone props open the lid and people begin to view Reno for one last time. The boy's family goes last, with LeRoy, the boyfriend, closing the casket afterward. A man in the back of the room gets up and accuses Mama Tuddi of having the devil inside her. She realizes that they want her to pay her respects to the boy, so she gets up and opens the casket, then says a few words, gives him a kiss, and places her fur coat beside him. The crowd applauds afterward. They all go outside to eat a potluck while they wait for the preacher. Mama Tuddi mingles with the other mourners and learns the story of how Reno got ill shortly after his father's funeral, became a fan of Mama Tuddi's, and then passed away. Mama Tuddi is touched by the story and begins to think that her life as a celebrity, which has prevented her from forming any friendships or other relationships, might not be worth it. While they are outside, the preacher arrives and leads everyone back into the building. Mrs. Brown and Reno's brother get candles and stand by the casket while the lights in the building are put out, and the Reverend preaches. Mama Tuddi thinks this is tacky. While she sits alone in her seat, she feels something intangible enter her heart. In his sermon, the preacher condemns people like Mama Tuddi who are not on the path towards God. But Mama Tuddi doesn't care, because she knows that the mysterious thing that entered Mama Tuddi's heart will give her the strength to grow as a celebrity and become famous world-wide.
