Plot Summary
Oliver is an enslaved miner on the moon. Deep beneath the lunar surface, he and the members of his bullpen mine for the element Promethium, a highly radioactive substance whose energy has propelled Earth and lunar surface-dwellers to the upper echelons of luxury. The miners have no memories of their lives before coming to the moon; they were likely criminals, insurgents, or of a low social class. Beyond the horrendous conditions to which the miners are subjected, they are starting to disappear one by one. The foremen blame the miners for the disappearances. Oliver is terrified of losing all his friends. Eventually, only he and a newcomer named Jakob are left in his unit. One day, on his way back from his shift, Oliver is seized, subdued, and kidnapped. A voice asks him if he is willing to take on the task of resisting the foremen, and he enthusiastically responds in the affirmative. His kidnappers turn out to be his missing friends, and he is incredibly happy to see them. They reveal that Jakob had been smuggling them away from the mines gradually. He arrives at their hiding spot, and the group begins the work of stealing from the foremen. They accumulate supplies, killing foremen as necessary, until they cannot avoid pursuit any longer. They resolve to mine their way to the moon’s surface, digging through the core to the crust with the supplies they’ve collected. In order to avoid pursuit, they manually move the rocks they mine away to the rear of their machine, closing the tunnel behind them. The work is grueling and there is no time for rest, but they make steady progress with Oliver acting as navigator. Things progress well until they break into an occupied mine shaft and engage with a horde of foremen. Jakob is shot, and the crew has no choice but to leave him behind in a rocky tomb. Forced to go on without their leader, the crew tightens their resolve and reaches the crust, just beneath the lunar city of Selene. They set massive explosive charges, detonating them as a team and sending the city into space. They emerge in space suits, looking for the first time upon space, the sun, and the earth. For a while, they simply marvel at the void beyond them. They all know that they will be captured and likely killed, but they don’t mind; they are content to simply gaze at the stars that surround them.
