Andi is a young, struggling guitarist in L.A., who cannot even afford to fix her car. One day, after riding the bus home from the recording studio, she realizes that she hasn't seen or heard from her elderly neighbor in three days. She lets herself into her neighbor's house with a spare key and discovers that Helen, her ninety-nine-year-old neighbor, has peacefully passed away.

Helen does not have much family, but her greedy great-grandchildren come up from San Diego to deal with her estate. Frustrated with finding so many things that they perceive as worthless, they offer to give Andi a run-down old guitar if she will deal with cleaning up and throwing away Helen's papers for them. Andi accepts.

Helen used to be an actress, albeit not a very famous one, and as Andi sorts through her papers, she learns more about her life. After cleaning through the house, Andi discovers some drawings of Helen that turn out to be incredibly valuable. The guitar she was paid with also turns out to be worth tens of thousands of dollars. To Andi, who has been struggling financially, these are a great help. After selling them, she even buys herself a Porsche; Helen's great-grandchildren are left with comparatively nothing.
