Plot Summary
In the dead of winter, Buck and a neighboring family, the Yancey's, set out to try and get a CAT rig down from a nearby mountain. When it was left there, multiple feet of snow banked onto it, leaving it stranded on the mountain. The people make their living off of selling lumber, so the loss of this heavy machinery would be detrimental to their livelihoods. They drive up in separate parties, Buck in one pickup truck, and Randal and his two young sons in another. The dad was hesitant to help at first, especially because his youngest son is still recovering from being sick recently, but decides to help Buck. Once they arrive at the CAT, it seems to be a much worse situation than they had originally bargained, though they don't let the freezing temperatures or feet of snow deter them. Instead, they attach the CAT to their car, trying to steer it out of the snow and into the plowed road. They make multiple attempts to pull the CAT out, but it skids along the path, never staying pleasantly on the road. At one point, they are hauling it down when it almost launches them in their car off the side of the mountain. The dad wants to stop, and his kids are clearly suffering from the cold, having to jump around and eventually build a fire to keep warm; however, Buck is insistent on getting the CAT down, even after it totals his pickup. Eventually, they meander the CAT down and drop Buck off at his house. When the dad is alone with his kids, he turns to them and says that they should never carry on fighting a mountain as Buck did. He tells them that they need to know when to give up, and they need to know winter.
