Ariya is a fifteen-year-old Yazidi girl living in the Islamic State. When she was twelve, she was taken captive by ISIS and given as a bride to her so-called husband, Imran. She has spent the three years trapped and in a physically abusive relationship. But when Imran goes out on a combat mission, Ariya finds an unexpected chance to escape. One day, while walking back from the market, she stumbles upon a wounded American Green Beret soldier. She takes him back to her home and attempts to tend to his wounds under the agreement that he will kill her husband for her. But as the soldier becomes sicker and sicker, Ariya must learn how to kill. When Imran finally comes home, Ariya attacks him with a knife. Though he nearly kills her, Ariya eventually kills him. She and the soldier uses Imran's car and escape together.
