An older woman is in a cabin in a meadow. Her husband, Richard, goes to town for the day, leaving the woman with her dog, Fifi. She walks through the woods, admiring the flowers and the herons and lamenting how she hasn’t yet seen a deer. She thinks about how much she values being alone, how great a reprieve it is from the stresses she had to endure in raising children. At night, Richard still hasn’t returned and Fifi goes missing. Frightened, the woman goes to investigate. She slips on a pool of Fifi’s blood and hits her head so hard that she is sure that she’ll never be able to move again. Lying on the floor, she finally sees the deer she sought out.
