Plot Summary
Jakaya Makinda is a 39-year-old senior park ranger in Tanzania, struggling to care for his family of six, as well as his late brother's wife and seven children. He works in a remote sector of the Serengeti with a staff of five other rangers, who patrol the land and try to stave off poachers from killing elephants for their tusks. In recent years, rhinoceros horns have become even more desirable than elephant tusks because of a Vietnamese politician who falsely claimed that rhino-horn powder can cure cancer. Ever since, Makinda has been offered huge bribes by poachers who want his help in locating rhinos in the Serengeti, including the only seven rhinos still alive in Makinda's sector of the park. Makinda has always turned down the bribes, although he was briefly tempted by an American poacher named Luther Ricker, who claimed that the rhino powder would help cure Makinda's dying brother. One day, while driving through the park, Makinda discovers the horrifying carcasses of a large group of elephants, hyenas, jackals, and vultures, who had all been killed by poachers. As Makinda investigates the scene, his Land Rover explodes behind him, leaving him stranded in a remote section of the park. Makinda realizes that rhino poachers are behind the attack, but he has no way of contacting his fellow rangers. While he searches for a safari group, he hears four more explosions in the distance. Based on their locations, Makinda deduces that the poachers have killed the rest of his staff, except for one ranger, Brayson. He realizes that Brayson must have accepted a bribe from the poachers. Makinda begins running down the road, intent on killing Brayson for the betrayal. He sees an approaching Land Rover in the distance, but something tells him that it's not a safari tour group, so Makinda hides in the brush. Sure enough, the car holds four armed men, including Luther Ricker, coming to make sure that Makinda's car blew up. After they leave, Makinda flags down a safari tour group and tells the tour guide, Chi, what's happened. They manage to discretely offload the tourists onto other safari vehicles. Chi decides to stay with Makinda and fight back against the poachers. Makinda drives them toward the last known location of each of the remaining rhinos, but they arrive too late, as each one has already been killed. This confirms for Makinda that Brayson must be telling the poachers where to go. Makinda realizes that the poachers are headed for a small nearby airstrip. Makinda and Chi hide near the airstrip, watching as the poachers kill a serviceman, then board a small plane with the rhino horns. As the plane takes off, Makinda and Chi shoot at the propellers and windows until the plane falls to the ground and explodes. Makinda and Chi head towards Brayson's house, intent on revenge.
