During her transportation towards a Nazi concentration camp, 14-year old Rosa struggles to raise her child Magda. Magda cries for Rosa’s breastmilk with little success, while Rosa herself starves every day. Rosa dreams of giving Magda away but imagines that she will only face death as a consequence and ushers the thought away. As a last resort, Rosa milks the shawl that Magda is wrapped in and it magically sustains the infant for three days.
Another woman named Stella notes that Magda looks Aryan, with hints of jealousy and distaste. Matters change when Stella steals the shawl away from Magda to warm herself. In response, Magda breaks her usual silence for the first time and cries for the shawl. Rosa hurries to free the shawl from under Stella in hopes of quieting the child and waves it from afar so Magda can see. Rather than moving towards Rosa, however, Magda is seized by a guard and hurled at an electric fence to her death. In horror, Stella bites onto the shawl to keep herself from screaming, knowing that she will only get shot if she reacts.
