Plot Summary
For twelve years, Aneni is encased in ice as her spaceship travels from Earth to Azania, a distant planet verified to have air and water. She wakes up after dreaming of her home in Central Africa and is greeted by She, an artificial intelligence form attached to the spaceship. Ezi continues sleeping next to her, and Aneni covers her with a blanket before leaving to get a full body scan. Before boarding the spacecraft for this mission, she was a psychologist trained in space psychosis and neurosurgery. Her brain scans show the area of pain she feels in her ear, but there are no signs of dysfunction. Aneni hears Ezi call for her and sees Petrus come out of the men's quarters. They gather for dinner and have She holographically project a kitchen setting. Anwar joins them, and it seems they are all experiencing ear pain. The gathering is a bit tense, especially since Petrus has a problem with Aneni and Ezi being in a queer relationship. Although they have arrived at the planet, the four residents of the spaceship have not gone out to explore. They are one of multiple spaceships sent out to explore the solar system. As the days pass, the pain intensifies to an unbearable level for all of them. Aneni tries to get answers from She, but the AI system cannot find the cause of the pain. She proposes that they return to Earth and abandon their mission since they will die anyway, but the AI system reveals that the journey back will take much longer than their remaining lifespan. They choose to stay quarantined on the spaceship and try to make the best of their situation as the pain fluctuates. Aneni gets tired of waiting and is the first to leave the spaceship despite She's warnings. The other three follow her outside and prepare to accept Azania as their new home. They gleefully dance together in a line while watching the dawn.
