Plot Summary
At the freshman orientation for computer science majors at New York University, Garry searches for Inaaya. The first time he saw her was during his freshman year of high school at a weekend-long Hackathon competition held at NYU. He describes the experience from the past: he is the only student who did not bring a parent to Hackathon since his father had to work and his mother was out of the picture. At Hackathon, Garry desperately looks around for signs of diversity. Inaaya and her mother, the latter of whom wears a hijab, are an immediate sight of relief. Garry is disappointed when Inaaya does not also choose Social Justice for her category, but he enjoys the competition. His team tries to develop an app to record threatening behavior from the police. The competition ends and Gary loses his chance to speak with Inaaya. At their next Hackathon competition, Garry works up the courage to ask Inaaya to join him for a walk. She happily agrees, and they introduce themselves. Garry mentions seeing her mother, and Inaaya says that she personally does not wear a hijab since she feels that being Muslim is already a part of herself. After the walk, they do not get another chance to talk again. At their third Hackathon competition, Garry notices that Inaaya is not as chipper and happy as she usually is. She joins the social justice category, and they team up for the competition. Inaaya admits that her mother wanted to accompany her for the competition, but she feels like she is getting too old for that now. She also mentions that her mother envisions something different for her life than she does: something more traditional. Garry shares his own story of moving in with his father after his mother neglected to properly care or provide for him. He is briefly interviewed by the Hackathon organizers, and his mother texts him to say that she saw him on TV and felt extremely proud. Later in the competition, Garry and Inaaya share a kiss, but she ignores him entirely after that. Back at the NYU welcoming event, Garry finally sees Inaaya. She now wears a hijab and motions for him to wait before talking with her. Garry realizes that he must let her go.
