In the midst of World War II, Ingrid Lombard and Robert Atherton meet at a nightclub in Rio after both being abandoned by their romantic partners. Ingrid is an older Swedish woman left by her husband, and Robert is a young American man abandoned by his first love. A club hostess familiar with the circumstances of both foreigners arranges the meeting to help them overcome their mutual lovesick status.
By drinking together, Ingrid and Robert find freedom from their emotional burdens. Their spirits are lifted as they temporarily forget their previous relationships in the company of each other. After leaving the nightclub together, they take a sobering and awkward cab ride back to Ingrid’s apartment. They share drinks at her place and talk about Brazil as a country of love. Ingrid begins to explain what happened to her marriage, and a comfortable silence settles over the room. Robert moves to embrace Ingrid, and the two spend the night together while also remembering their old lovers. They part with a silent, passionless kiss, and Robert leaves her apartment and walks down a foggy sidewalk.
