Plot Summary
Lee Stewart, a white man, has been known to hold a tense hatred towards Lieutenant Henderson, a Black man. Though it may not be the only reason, the soldiers suspect that part of Henderson’s hatred stems from racism. Word goes around that Stewart is going to murder Henderson and people tell him to be careful. A week later, Stewart and Henderson have their first physical contact as Stewart struggles to fix a jeep and Henderson shows him how to loosen a plug. Stewart stares and swears at Henderson, but Henderson merely walks away. However, Henderson starts to notice Stewart’s resentment and starts assigning him difficult and more frequent tasks. Henderson even starts using Stewart as a personal driver, and this is the last straw for the white man. Stewart decides that he will take his fatal action and kill. Lieutenant Henderson runs into Stewart after hours, and tells him he has heard of a murder plot among the barracks. To Stewart’s disbelief, he says that he will thus need a bodyguard and gives Stewart a gun while telling him to follow behind him at all times. Despite this prolonged opportunity, however, Stewart finds that he cannot shoot Henderson, not when he has been handed a gun and when Henderson has put so much trust and uncertainty in his hands.
