Plot Summary
Justin is a 19-year-old boy who works in a mechanic shop in Waterbury, Connecticut. He works for Nick and Mary Ann. Nick is an excellent mechanic and Justin’s role model. Mary Ann is Nick's wife, with whom Justin has started an affair. Recently, Nick has made mistakes on his repair jobs, which has cost the repair shop a lot of money. Despite this, Justin still emulates him. Nick gives Justin bigger projects, while Justin vows to Mary Ann that he’ll never leave her. She scoffs and says that it’s just like a young man to say that. She reminisces about the death of her and Nick's child, a horrible event that still causes her great sadness. When Justin tries to console her, she turns away from him. To recuperate the money they have lost, Nick and Mary Ann decide to sell their shop and move to Oregon. Justin feels betrayed and asks Nick if he can come work with them there. Although Nick says yes, Mary Ann tells him to stay away. Justin realizes that Mary Ann sabotaged Nick’s work to compel him to move. Mary Ann doesn’t deny it; she needs to get on with her life. Justin will get left behind, with only Mary Ann’s stories to remind him of what could have been.
