Juan is a junior high student at Fairmont High, a school for gifted students. Ironically, this is a futuristic story set in the 2020s. The students have an assortment of gadgets and technology that assist with their schoolwork. One project though, requires the use of no Internet. Juan partners with Miriam and they wander through Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve Park late at night and discover that FoxWarner has began setting up for an interactive series. The two end up exploring with Miriam's grandfather and discover a breed of highly intelligent mice. The ending is left open, but it is implied that this will lead to an A grade for the pair.
