Living in New Mexico, Justus thinks about his late father, Clayton Hobbs. Clayton had been a successful windmill man for decades, but he fell off a windmill nearly a month ago and passed away. Before this incident, Clayton had taught his son everything he knew about his trade. Taking over his father's job, Justus feels mostly content, at least with the fact that his wife is happy in their new mobile home.
However, Justus has a premonition, and bad luck manifests itself when he is tasked with erecting the Royal Don windmill. While working on it, his helper, Jesse, gets injured. The next day, the windmill has a broken wire, leaks water, and faces a brewing storm.
Though it hasn’t rained for nearly a year, a storm breaks out as Justus goes to help Jesse fix the broken part of the cursed windmill. Justus realizes he must climb on top of the windmill to hitch a wire and takes the risk. He successfully climbs and feels a brief moment of exhilaration at the top. Suddenly lightning strikes him and he is thrown off the structure, and is left, puking, dying in a limp pile on the ground.
