Plot Summary
Neil Fisk is a middle-aged man in a contemporary world who does not love nor hate God. He is married to a woman named Sarah, who was the first woman to love him completely without prejudice towards his physical deformity. Sarah is killed when shards of glass cause her to bleed to death when an angel comes to Earth for a visitation. Sarah loved God but never pressured Neil to; Sarah’s soul was seen ascending to Heaven. Neil is aware that Sarah’s soul is in heaven, and he is devastated because he would have rather her soul go to Hell so they could be together as he does not know how to love God for the sole purpose of being reunited with his wife.
While the visitation had many casualties, it also cured individuals and showed them the light of Heaven. Many individuals created support groups for those impacted by the visitation. Many people assumed Neil’s deformity was the cause of God’s interference and/or from the Angel’s visitation. Neil continually responded that it was not. Neil became angry with the witnesses, not just because of this, but because of the way, they found devotion because of the visitation. Neil feels he owed it to Sarah to continue attending these groups but cannot stay in the toxically positive group. Neil switches to a new group in which members were angry at God. These people are often also non-devout and expected to descend to Hell. Hell is simply the absence of God. These people are comforted in knowing that an eternal existence outside of paradise was possible. However, this was not true for Neil as Sarah is in Heaven. Neil wants to love God so he can be with her. Neil's path is interconnected with two individuals: Janice Reilly and Ethan Mead.
Janice was born without legs and continually preached that her disability was a challenge specifically for her from God; it was a type of gift. During a visitation, Janice was miraculously given legs. Janice continued to speak, though now her talks related her having the ability to walk as a challenge from God, not a blessing, as it made it harder for her to share the Word. Neil hears her speak and challenges her as he knew his disability was not a religious problem. This is one facet of devotion that is a challenge to Neil.
The other individual who plays a significant role in Neil’s story is Ethan Mead. Ethan believes God has a specific purpose for his life, but he does not yet know what it is. Following the visitation of the Angel, Ethan is not cursed or blessed in any way but feels that there had to be some meaning in the visitation specifically for him. He then attends the support meetings. He becomes connected with Janice Reilly who also does not know what to make of the visitation.
Neil goes to see his in-law who blamed his lack of devoutness for Sarah’s death. They tell him that because he did not view his deformity as a sign from God, Sarah died to teach him a lesson. This is the moment Neil becomes committed to being devout.
Neil goes on a pilgrimage where he becomes a light-seeker meaning he will chase the angel until he is able to see the light of Heaven, which is the ultimate way to become truly devout. This is also the most dangerous way. At the holy site, he meets Ethan and Janice. A visitation occurs. Both Janice and Neil are struck by God's light. During this, they both finally love God unconditionally and understand the meaning of appreciating life through God. Ethan saw both Janice and Neil remade by God. However, Neil then dies and is sent to Hell.
Janice resumes her work as an evangelical but no longer speaks about being physically handicapped. Ethan becomes a preacher but talks about how loving God is not about loving a kind, just, or graceful diety.
They all still love God and are devoted to him, even Neil, who became a lost soul in Hell.
