Plot Summary
In Paris, an unnamed man and his fellow agent Léon spy on Karl Joachim Gross, also known as The Smiler, who supervised the killing of thousands of Jews during World War II and is now an old man. As a cover-up for his past, Gross owns a newspaper and spends time with a young girl and a nanny or nurse. After spending five years looking for Gross, Léon and his partner spend two weeks watching the ex-Nazi, planning how to abduct him as part of the HQ that catches Nazi fugitives, which is based in Paris. Léon and his partner wait and wait for confirmation that they can pursue Gross, and the unnamed partner grows agitated having to watch Gross lead a normal life, as he had family members killed by Gross during the war. Eventually, the two men receive orders and decide to abduct Gross on a Sunday because Gross brings the young girl to La Madeleine without the nurse on Sundays. Before the beginning of their mission, the two men speak with Varda, whom they both used to be involved with, although the unnamed man had a longer, more substantial relationship with her. Varda tries to offer her help on the mission, and Léon refuses adamantly, which upsets his partner, who begins to think that Varda may be able to help. The three of them begin to squabble, but Varda ultimately joins the mission. On the day of the mission, Gross does not show up at the predicted time. After an hour, he finally comes around the corner with the little girl, the nurse, and a large group of other little girls, all classmates. Despite the change of plans, the unnamed agent says they should abduct Gross anyway, but Gross notices the three agents immediately and screams. The nurse seems prepared, expertly attacking Léon and then the unnamed agent. Varda ends up struggling with the little girl and then the nurse, as Léon gets knocked over and begins to bleed from the impact. The unnamed agent realizes that Varda has harmed the nurse far more seriously than they intended, and she pulls one of the girl’s hair, making the unnamed agent panic. He realizes that the girl is not even Gross’ family member; she is one of the classmates. The unnamed agent becomes unable to move, and Gross starts to escape. However, Varda screams loudly for him to halt, and he surprisingly does, but shows them a creepy smile. The unnamed agent grabs his gun and aims but hopes that his shot will miss.
