Plot Summary
Matt finds his wife Clara in the backyard, who tells him the dead rabbit he threw out has returned. Matt thinks the lawn rabbits might have some predator killing them. Clara is unsettled, believing something terrible is happening. In fear, she asks Matt what he thinks the mysterious predator wants. Matt laments that the woman he loved years ago is long gone, and now he is stuck with something he never wanted. Matt attempts to console Clara by saying it was probably a cat or dog, but she is unrelenting in her fear that something dreadful will happen. Matt and Clara have not had sex in a long time because Matt has been afraid to touch her. Their doctor kept prescribing new pills for her that didn’t seem to work. When Matt goes to dispose of the rabbit, he sees a piece of its body now pushed against the fence. The corpse’s bright red muscle catches his attention as it looks dyed and unreal. The next morning, Matt cannot find Clara anywhere in the house. He eventually finds her kneeling in the backyard as usual. She is crying and has blood on her sleeves but no cuts. He finds himself stepping on another dead and bloody rabbit. He runs to get a cloth to cover the rabbit but returns to find Clara gone. He wonders how she could have moved so quickly. He gives up and expects someone will call the police if they see her roaming around. By sunset, Matt considers going to the police but cannot bear thinking about the humiliating process. He reflects on Clara’s deterioration throughout their marriage until now as an older woman. He feels he is not a good man, so he cannot handle how difficult Clara has become. Matt sees flame-like flashes from the trees beyond his porch. He looks out at the fence again, and the rabbit from the morning is gone. Closer to its edge, he sees a human body stripped down to its muscle and bone. It reaches its arms toward the house and calls Matt’s name.
